As everyone knows, this past Saturday was the big Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Well, all of my closest friends know I love hats and hair accessories! For my bridal shower, I specifically asked for a tea party just so I could wear a hat! Then, I decided I would host an ANNUAL tea party so I could use all of my tea cups and saucers AND wear a hat every year!

Royal Wedding Fun and What I Learned About Dressing Up

So you could imagine my excitement when I found out the Royal Wedding was on Saturday! When I studied abroad in London ages ago, I actually purchased a fascinator. We are talking, almost a decade ago! I had no occasion to wear it, but I just fell in love with it! So this past Saturday, I was so excited I had an excuse to wear my beloved fascinator!

I thought, okay, I’ll wear it with a slim-fitting dress so I don’t look overdressed. I am, after all, just going to work. But my sister said, “Nah! You have to dress up like you’re going to the Royal Wedding!” So…that’s what I did! I figured, well, the one perk of working retail is that I get to wear whatever I want as long as it’s fashionable!! So I opted for a fit and flare Kate Spade dress!

How to “tone down” a dress / make it less “dressy”

I “toned it down” by pairing it with a long sleeved tee that I tied into a knot and folded under, and with Kate Spade Keds! These Glitter Champion Keds were actually my dancing shoes at my wedding a few years back. At the time, the glitter Keds were new and they only came in black and gold. Because my wedding colors were blush and champagne, I swapped out the black laces with blush ribbon from my wedding stationary. Lo and behold, 2-3 years later, Kate Spade came out with a gold glitter Ked with pink trim and pink laces!! Now, they have one that is solid rose gold!

You might think that these shoes are a little loud for everyday wear. After my wedding, I kept them stored in the original box on a shelf in my closet for 2 years. I took them out a few times but just wasn’t sure how to wear them. So I would try it on with an outfit, check myself out in the mirror, and then put them back up. Then, when I started working retail, I figured, who cares! I can wear anything as long as it’s fashionable! Now, I wear them all the time and I have to say I get compliments on my shoes ALL THE TIME! So, if you’re feeling iffy on a bold fashion trend, just do it! Cease the moment! Gold glitter is basically a neutral! So, you can wear them with anything!

Reactions

Needless to say, the outfit was an absolute hit with my co-workers! They thought it was so fun! BUT, more importantly, I just had a great day! I realized that there is definitely truth to the idea that you should dress how you want to feel! I knew I looked good and I felt good! Plus, it just made me so happy! Regardless of whether people complimented my outfit, I just loved it and it made me feel so good! I thought, nothing can get me down today! And I’m closing the store! Which under normal circumstances, nobody is happy when they have closing duties on a Saturday night! Seriously, when people find out that you’re closing, they apologize and feel bad for you! That really goes to show the difference an outfit can make on your attitude!! I had closing responsibilities, and yet I was so happy!

So the takeaway point – sometimes, you should just dress up! Make a fuss! Get all dolled up! You will feel better and your outlook on life will be more optimistic!
